True Worship & Getting Closer to God

faith May 16, 2023

True worship is a lifestyle, not a one-time experience. When we often think of "worship," we imagine the right songs and atmosphere. The thing is, worship is more than that.

The Bible says that we must worship God "in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). I asked God what does this mean and wondered how could I worship Him in spirit and in truth...

Then, He led me to Deuteronomy 6:5 which says,

"Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." (Deut. 6:5)

What you love
What you dedicate all your life and time to
What you spend most of your time doing or thinking about

THAT is what you worship.

If it's not the one and true living God, Jesus Christ, then it's an idol.

Do you have idols?

Maybe it's a person? If it is, you may have to leave that relationship alone. Maybe it's materialism? If so, then give some things away.
Or maybe it's social media? You may have to cut down on screen time.

Getting closer to God requires that you redirect your time, focus, and affections toward Him. Our love and dedication for God should cause us to want to know Him more and grow in Him every day.

The Bible says, "Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands, and a pure heart; who has not lifted his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully." (Ps. 24:3-4)

Did you catch that?

In order to live a lifestyle of pure worship unto God... you can't worship two gods! The bible says in Mathew 6:24: "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."

If you have idols, it's time to reignite that fire and passion that you once had when you first came to know God. If you love Him you'll obey Him, get to know Him, listen to Him, and turn back to Him.

Don't simply settle for a one-time worship experience at church. You can develop a true and eternal relationship with your Creator, Lover, Savior, and Friend, Jesus Christ.
